The aim of the project is to restore salmon habitat and move erosive forces away from CN Rail and Squamish Nation banks.
BACKGROUND
The Mosquito Creek watershed includes the tributaries Thain, Wagg, and Mission creeks, and drains directly into Burrard Inlet at the site of the Mosquito Creek marina on Squamish lands. In 2020, salmon habitat was created in its lower reaches by adding large log and boulder clusters downstream of Bewicke Avenue and upstream of the CN Rail Bridge.
In 2024, BC Wildlife Federation became our partners on Phase 2, and with their help, a further 130-meter stretch was enhanced from Bewicke Avenue bridge to Second Street bridge. Before restoration, the reach of the stream channel was uniform, the stream bed compacted, and there was little variability throughout the channel in depth.
After restoration, new LWD and boulder clusters stabilized the stream banks and added more complexity to the stream channel. This increased protective cover for fish from predators and provides greater depth and cooler water temperature year-round and helps dilute the damaging effects of spill events. Work was completed in early September 2024, in time to welcome a record Pink and Coho salmon return in fall and winter of 2024.
Project Status
Due to a shortage of Large Woody Debris (LWD) in 2024, 80% of the Phase 2 design was completed in 2024.
In February 2025, the Mosquito Creek project was awarded $450,000 through the federal Environmental Damages Fund (hyperlink). This funding is the result of a joint application with BCWF, and we look forward to Phase 3 – extending habitat enhancements a further 160m upstream this summer!
Additionally, the remaining 20% of Phase 2 will be constructed.
